The Beni Ourain rug has been in great demand that last year and this Moroccan kilim and Berber mat really has a beauty that few other rugs can match. Trendcarpet works with a local rug dealer at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, who every week travels up the mountain to buy Beni Ourain and Azilal rugs from the Berber tribes. We thus gain access to antique, semi-antique and new Beni Ourain rugs of fantastic quality – at a price that is far under the normal.
A Beni Ourain rug – a fantastic piece of art.
The Beni Ourain tribe consists of several different Berber tribes, some of whom have moved down to the lowland whilst others still dwell up among the Atlas Mountains and live on raising sheep. The sheep produce unparalleled wool of the highest quality, and it is from this wool that they make the famous Beni Ourain rugs. The women – it is usually they that weave the rugs in the tribe – create the rugs from their own life experiences, where nature, love, childbirth, believe and womanhood are often present in the rug. Nor is it unusual for a Beni Ourain to have been woven as a guard against external threats and, for this reason, the rugs are provided with good luck amulets and other elements to bring luck, happiness and welfare.
